Georgia says you can change your legal name online through My Voter Page. You have to be registered at least 30 days before an election to vote in it.

Where it sits

Do this after your license, not before

Federal motor-voter law puts a voter registration block on most state license applications, so the DMV visit is often the moment a registration is updated too. Whether it actually propagates is a state-by-state answer, and it is the one worth checking rather than assuming — arriving at a polling place under a name the roll does not hold is a problem you cannot fix on the day.

Your registration should match the name you give at the polling place, and it should match the ID you present if Georgia asks for one.

Common questions

Georgia voter registration questions

Does changing my name at the Georgia DMV update my voter registration?
Georgia does not say. The two systems do not always talk to each other, so check your registration rather than assume it happened.
Does it cost anything to update a Georgia voter registration?
No. Updating a voter registration is free in every state that registers voters.

When you’re ready to do it

Everything above is free. Everything else on the list is the work.

You can do all of this yourself with the links on this page — every underlying form is free. What we sell is the evening back: the official forms filled in from your answers, the steps in Georgia in the order that works, and a written letter for every bank, employer and insurer you have to tell.

Two questions about your situation first, because there is one answer that means we can’t help — and we would rather tell you that before you pay than after.
