Terms of Service
Last updated 3 October 2026
Name Change Works is operated by Archelaus LLC, a New York limited liability company (“Archelaus”, “we”, “us”). These Terms govern your use of the service, together with our Privacy Policy and our Refund Policy. You accept these Terms when you continue to payment; the checkout page says so beside the button.
1. What the service is
We prepare document packages from information you supply. That package may include government forms populated with your answers, written correspondence addressed to third parties, and informational summaries of published agency requirements. We deliver documents. We do not file anything on your behalf, communicate with any agency on your behalf, or cause any change to your legal name.
2. We are not a law firm
Archelaus is not a law firm and is not licensed to practice law in any jurisdiction. No attorney–client relationship is created by your use of this service. Nothing we provide is legal advice. We do not select legal remedies for you, advise on the legal effect of any document, or interpret any court order, decree, certificate, or other legal instrument on your behalf. Where the service asks whether a document contains particular wording, you are reporting what you have read in your own document; we do not verify, assess, or form any view about it.
We do not prepare, review, advise on, or file petitions for a court-ordered name change, and we do not offer any service relating to obtaining a court order.
3. Who may use the service
You must be 18 or older to buy or use the service. You may use it to prepare documents for your own name change, or for another adult who knows you are doing so and has asked you to; in that case you are responsible for the accuracy of everything you enter about them. We do not prepare documents for a minor’s name change.
4. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the information you give us, for reviewing every document before you sign or submit it, for signing where a signature is required, and for meeting any deadline that applies to you. Government agencies change forms, fees, and procedures without notice; the agency’s own published requirements govern, not ours.
5. No guarantee of acceptance
Every document in the package is submitted by you to an agency that will review it and decide whether to accept it. We do not guarantee that any agency will accept any document, nor do we guarantee any processing time, outcome, or result. Statements about fees, deadlines, and processing times reflect what the relevant agency published on the date shown in the document and may since have changed.
6. Payment
Purchases are one-time. There is no subscription and no recurring charge. Prices are shown before purchase and charged in US dollars. Where we are required to collect sales tax, it is shown at checkout before you pay. Refunds are governed by our Refund Policy.
7. Printed packages
Printed packages are not currently offered for new purchase. Where you have already bought one, this section continues to apply.
Where you buy a package that includes a printed copy, we print your documents and hand them to a third-party print-and-mail provider for delivery by first-class mail to the US address you give at checkout. Your digital files are delivered immediately and are not conditional on the printed copy arriving.
At checkout you choose when the envelope moves: as soon as the documents are ready, or after you have looked them over. If you choose to review first, nothing is sent to the printer until you confirm it from your kit page. We will remind you if you do not, and we will not send it on your behalf; there is no time after which it goes out automatically. Confirming rebuilds any document that has fallen behind your answers, so the envelope carries the current version.
The delivery address is the one you enter at checkout, and you are responsible for its accuracy; we cannot redirect or recall an item once it has been printed. Where a packet has already been mailed, you may buy one further printed copy of the same order for $15. That is a separate one-time purchase, it is limited to one per order, it grants nothing beyond the printing and postage, and its checkout collects the delivery address again rather than reusing the address on your order. We do not warrant any delivery date, and postal transit times are outside our control. We do not collect your Social Security number, so every form we prepare — printed or downloaded — leaves each Social Security field blank for you to complete by hand; the enclosed cover sheet names each one.
8. Your kit and your email address
Your kit is reached by a link we email to the address you bought with. That link can be used more than once until it expires, and you can ask for a fresh one at any time. You are responsible for the security of that email account: anyone who can read it can open your kit. We act on support, correction, and deletion requests that come from that address, and we may decline a request that comes from any other.
9. Re-preparation of rejected forms
If a receiving agency rejects a form we prepared for you, we will prepare it again at no additional charge for one year from the date of your purchase. This applies to every package we sell. It is not a warranty that any agency will accept any document, we do not review or check your completed forms before you submit them, and nothing in this section alters section 2 or section 5. Our Refund Policy also lets you take a refund instead, on the terms set out there; the two are one promise, and you choose which half of it you want.
10. Your documents and our materials
The documents we prepare for you are yours, to use for your own name change. The government forms are the agencies’ own and we claim nothing in them. Everything else — our templates, the wording of our letters and checklists, and this site — remains ours. You may not resell it, republish it, or use it to offer a document-preparation service to anyone else.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Archelaus’ total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us for the package giving rise to the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost opportunity, agency rejection, delay, or any fee paid to a third party. The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind except those that cannot be excluded by law.
These limits do not apply to liability for our gross negligence or intentional misconduct, or to any liability that the law where you live does not allow us to limit or exclude.
12. Disputes, arbitration, and governing law
Talk to us first. If you have a dispute with us, email support@namechangeworks.com and describe it. Both of us will try to resolve it that way for 30 days before either of us starts an arbitration.
Arbitration. If that does not settle it, the dispute will be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, rather than in court. The Federal Arbitration Act governs this section. If there is a hearing, it will be held in the county where you live, or by video or telephone, whichever you prefer, and you may instead ask for the dispute to be decided on written submissions alone. You pay no more than the AAA consumer filing fee; we pay the rest of the arbitration fees.
Small claims. Either of us may bring an individual claim in small-claims court instead of arbitrating it.
You can opt out. Email support@namechangeworks.com within 30 days of your purchase saying that you opt out of arbitration, and this arbitration agreement will not apply to you. Everything else in these Terms still does, and opting out costs you nothing.
No class actions. Claims are brought individually. You and Archelaus each waive any right to a jury trial and to participate in a class or representative action. If a court holds that the class-action waiver cannot be enforced as to a particular claim, that claim proceeds in court rather than in arbitration, and the rest of this section still applies to every other claim.
Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles, and any claim not subject to arbitration, other than a small-claims matter, will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New York County, New York. Nothing here removes a consumer-protection right you have where you live.
Which version applies. The changes made to this section on 3 October 2026 (revision 2026-10-03.2) apply to purchases made under that revision or a later one. A purchase made before then stays under the dispute terms that were in force when it was made, except that either of us may always bring an individual claim in small-claims court.
13. Notice to California residents

You may also contact the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs in writing at 1625 North Market Blvd., Suite N 112, Sacramento, CA 95834, or by telephone at (800) 952-5210.
14. General
If any part of these Terms is held unenforceable, the rest stays in force. These Terms, with the Privacy Policy and the Refund Policy, are the entire agreement between us about the service, except that a purchase made before revision 2026-10-03.2 keeps the dispute terms in force when it was made, as section 12 says. If we do not enforce something straight away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later. We may assign these Terms to a successor of the business; you may not assign them. We send notices to you at the email address you purchased with.
15. Changes
We may update these Terms. The version in force at the time of your purchase governs that purchase, except that a change which only adds to your protections — such as the limits on section 11 and the notice in section 13 — applies to every purchase from the day it is published. Continuing to use the service after a change, including downloading or editing a kit you already bought, never changes how a dispute about a purchase you already made is resolved; only a new purchase is made under the new version. We keep every earlier version and record which version you accepted with your order.
