Changing your name with Fidelity Investments
What Fidelity Investments requires, transcribed from its own help page and last checked on 25 July 2026.
Fidelity handles a legal name change online, verifying identity with a text to the mobile number on file plus an ID upload and a selfie.
Fidelity Investments handles this online or by phone.
You will need: a valid government-issued ID showing the new name, such as a driver license or passport.
Do the government agencies first — most companies ask for photo ID in your new name, which means your license has to be done already.

What to have ready
- A valid government-issued ID showing the new name, such as a driver license or passport
- A selfie, for identity verification
- Sometimes a legal document such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order
How to do it
- Log in to Fidelity.com and open the Name Change page.
- Enter your new name exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID.
- Fidelity texts a link to the mobile number on file to validate your identity.
- Upload a valid government-issued ID showing the new name and take a selfie.
- Depending on the validation result you may also be asked for a copy of a legal document.
- Fidelity emails a confirmation once the change is processed, with links to reorder checks and debit cards.
The details that catch people out
- The name on the account is the name used on the tax forms sent to you and to the IRS.
- A name change does not carry over to a 401(k) or other workplace plan — that goes through your employer or NetBenefits separately.

Two questions about your situation first, because there is one answer that means we can’t help — and we would rather tell you that before you pay than after.
