Changing your name with GEICO
What GEICO requires, transcribed from its own help page and last checked on 25 July 2026.
GEICO does not edit the policyholder's name on an existing policy. The policy is canceled and rewritten under the new name instead.
GEICO handles this by phone.
Do the government agencies first — most companies ask for photo ID in your new name, which means your license has to be done already.

| Documents | GEICO publishes no document list. | Car Insurance Policyholders — GEICO |
How to do it
- Contact GEICO to request the policyholder name change.
- GEICO cancels the existing policy and issues a new one in the new name rather than amending the current record.
- Check the new policy documents when they arrive, because the policy number and dates may not carry over unchanged.
The details that catch people out
- This applies to changing the policyholder's own name, which GEICO treats differently from edits it lets you make yourself.
- Because the policy is rewritten rather than amended, new policy documents are always issued.

GEICO is one insurer or health plan on the list. See every company we have verified, or the full checklist of who needs telling.
Everything above is free. Writing to every one of them is the work.
You can do all of this yourself with the links on this page — every underlying form is free. What we sell is the evening back: the official forms filled in from your answers, the steps in the order that works, and a written letter for every bank, employer and insurer you have to tell.
Two questions about your situation first, because there is one answer that means we can’t help — and we would rather tell you that before you pay than after.
