What should I carry while my documents do not all match?
Carry a certified copy of the document that links the two names, and make sure the ticket matches the ID you will actually hand over.
For a few weeks in the middle of a name change your documents disagree with each other: a new Social Security record, an old license, a passport that has not been sent yet, a card in one name and a booking in another. That is normal, and it is temporary.
The one thing to have with you
A certified copy of the document that changed your name. It is what connects the former name to the new one, and it is what a counter asking about the difference will want to see. It is not identification, it does not replace an ID, and nobody can tell you in advance how a particular desk will treat it — but it is the only piece of paper that explains the gap.
Keep one pair matched
You do not need every document to agree at once. You need the ticket and the ID you will present to agree. Decide which ID that is before you book, and leave that document alone until you are home.
- Order more than one certified copy, so the one in your bag is not the one an agency is holding.
- Keep it flat and unlaminated. Lamination defeats the seal check and several states refuse a laminated copy outright.
- Hotel and rental bookings are counters too. A card in one name and a reservation in another is a short conversation, but it is easier had with the document in hand.
The gap closes in the order the checklist runs: Social Security, then your license, then your passport. Every week you are in it, fewer documents disagree.
