Name Change Works

Do I need a REAL ID when I change my name?

A name change does not oblige you to get a REAL ID. But enforcement is in effect for domestic flights, so a reissue is the natural moment to ask what your state needs to make your card compliant.

REAL ID enforcement began in May 2025 and is in effect: a license or ID that is not REAL ID compliant is not sufficient on its own at an airport checkpoint for a domestic flight. TSA publishes the list of identification it does accept. Since February 2026 it has also offered ConfirmID, a $45 identity-verification alternative at the checkpoint.

None of that is a deadline on your name change. It is a question about which card you intend to fly with.

What a compliant card asks for

A REAL ID compliant card asks for a fuller document set than a standard one, and exactly what your state wants at a name-change reissue is its own answer rather than a national one. We do not publish a blanket list, because there is no blanket list to publish. Your state sheet links to the page your state maintains, which is where the current requirements live.

The question to ask at the counter

Ask whether the card you are being issued will be REAL ID compliant, and what it would take to make it so. It is a two-minute question while you are already there, and the alternative is finding out at an airport.

Bring more than you think you need to a reissue appointment. A second trip because one document was missing costs far more than carrying a folder.
